Probably the roof was so low that no ropes were needed to let the man down.

1 and again he entered into capernaum after some days. They were determined to get their friend to jesus. When they had made an opening they let the man down lying on his mat. They even pulled him up on top of the house and made a hole in the roof to bring him to jesus.

Sometimes a roller would be used to pack down the clay. This made for a hard clay roof. And when they had broken it up they let down the bed wherein the sick of the palsy lay. And it was noised that he was in the house.

The lame man had some very good friends. People inside the house could reach up and take him as those outside let him down. Good news translation because of the crowd however they could not get the man to him. 5 when jesus saw their faith he said unto the sick of the palsy son thy sins be forgiven thee.

And he preached the word unto them. So they made a hole in the roof above him and let the man down in front of everyone. 3 and they come unto him bringing one sick of the palsy which was borne of four. 4 and when they could not come nigh unto him for the press they uncovered the roof where he was.

So they made a hole in the roof right above the place where jesus was. To make a hole the men would have had to dig through the clay and remove some of the sticks. If your friend knows jesus you can encourage him or her. We can learn a lesson about friendship from this story.
